DODGEVILLE - Mary Ellen (Fox) Cherry, age 83, of Dodgeville, died on Sunday, March 25, 2001, at Bloomfield Manor, following a long illness. The former Mary Ellen Fox was born in Dodgeville on October 2, 1917, to Will and Margaret (Dresback) Fox. She was a 1935 graduate of Cobb High School and graduated from Dodgeville Teacher's Training in 1936. She attended UW-Platteville, where she received a B.S. degree in education. She began her career in education in 1936, teaching in Bunker Hill rural school and teaching in several Iowa County rural schools. She retired from teaching, after 47 years, in May 1983 from Dodgeville Middle School as the seventh- and eighth-grade teacher. On March 23, 1956, she was married to Roy G. Cherry of the Cobb-Highland area. The couple farmed in the Cobb-Highland area on the Fox century farm homestead. Mary Ellen was a member of Dodgeville United Methodist Church and the Ruth and Esther Circles. She was a 50-year member of the Dodgeville Order of Eastern Star No. 39, Dodgeville Past Matrons Club, and the Iowa County Retired Educators. She served for six years on the legislative committee of the state of Wisconsin Educators Association Council. Mary Ellen is survived by cousins, former students and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy on March 7, 1996; her father, Will W. Fox, on January 31, 1961; and her mother, Margaret E. Fox, on March 31, 1965. Eastern Star services will be held at 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 27, 2001 at LULLOFF-PETERSON-HOUCK FUNERAL HOME, Dodgeville, followed by funeral services with Pastor Jean Bartlett officiating. Private family burial will be held at the East Side Cemetery, Dodgeville, on Wednesday, March 28, 2001. Friends may call at the funeral home after 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to a seventh- and eighth-grade social studies scholarship fund at M&I Bank of Dodgeville.
