Florence E. Holland

DODGEVILLE - Florence E. Holland, a long time teacher of young children, passed away at her home on Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2008. She was born on Dec. 21, 1916, the second of four daughters, to the late Eugene and Edith (Griffiths) Gardner of the Ridgeway area. Florence was a descendent of the Griffiths and Higgon families who came to Wisconsin from Wales as early settlers. She was educated at the Ridgeway schools. Proud of her Welsh heritage and the love of books and education, she went on to graduate from the University of Wisconsin, school of education, Platteville. Following graduation she began her teaching career. Her teaching work took her to Brigham, the Ridgeway grade school, and the Dodgeville public schools, where she taught under the tutelage of the noted Milton A. Fisher, administrator and superintendent. On June 3, 1950, Florence was married to Bernard "Barney" Holland, the son of John P. and Sarah (Deery) Holland of Darlington. She and her husband continued to live their entire working years in Dodgeville. Florence held lifetime memberships in the University of Wisconsin Alumni Association, The Wisconsin Retired Teachers Association, and the Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. She was a charter member of the Iowa County Historical Society and the Iowa County Retired Teachers Association. Florence and Barney were past members of the early organization of the Dodgeville Chamber of Commerce. The couple traveled widely and had enjoyed the great privilege of attending many International Kiwanis Conventions, one being held in Vienna, Austria. In Hungary, they experienced a country behind the iron curtain. Lasting friends that were made in European countries, the Hawaiian islands, in Alaska and their home in Arizona remain. Florence is survived by two sisters, Mary J. Bennett of Madison and Betty G. Mortensen of Puyallup, Wash.; and is further survived by nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard; his parents; two sisters; and her sister, Anna Bennett. The family will greet friends from 11:30 a.m. until the 1 p.m. service on Monday, March 3, 2008, at the LULLOFF-PETERSON-HOUCK FUNERAL HOME in Dodgeville. The Rev. Thomas LeRoy Strutt will officiate. The family invites friends and relatives to remain for a coffee hour following the service. Burial services will be held at East Side Cemetery in Dodgeville. Memorial contributions may be made directly to a church of your choice. The family wishes to thank Ken Palzkill for the friendship and care he provided to Florence over the years and especially during the weeks prior to her death.
